Rodas de Rapé
Rapé, also spelled Hapé, Hapeh, Rapéh, or simply known as snuff, is a form of smokeless tobacco part of rituals and ceremonies traditionally incorporated by different Indigenous traditions in South America. The interactions with this medicine can unfold diverse affects, encompassing medicinal, communal, and spiritual purposes.
Physically absorbed as a nasal snuff, rapé typically consists of finely ground tobacco (commonly Nicotiana rustica), often blended with ashes of trees and other medicinal plants
Since 2024, the circles have been held bi-weekly on Friday evenings, either within the University of Ottawa premises or at Strathcona Park, weather permitting. We initially began with a small group of students who were already familiar with the medicine (rapé) and who were willing to share with others some of their spiritual practices and learnings in ways that honour Indigenous traditions. Willing to enrich the group and community experience, the circles are open to any community member interested in having an experience with the medicine of the forest.
